Coming to Netflix in June

Netflix has some good options for you as we head into summer and all you want to do is sit in the air conditioned house and watch movies.
The most exciting movie coming up is Okja. The Netflix original film is directed by Bong Joon Ho who has deliverd two great movies in the past with Snowpiercer and the Korean monster film The Host.  The film stars Tilda Swinton and Paul Dano.  It about a girl and her pet monster.  It's certain to have everyone talking.

Disney continues to release their biggest films to Netflix and June sees Moana making the leap to the streaming platform.  Disney took a risk inking a deal with Netflix and it's certainly paying off for Netflix subscribers who get to see their favorite Disney movies shortly after coming out on home video.

Two other movies worth noting are completely different from each other but classics in their own right.  Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein the hilarious spoof on the Frankenstein story. Which seems appropriate as Universal tries to remake their monster movies we will probably need a good laugh.  Also Zodiac. The 2007 David Fincher movie that was highly praised but under seen when it first came out.  If you haven't seen it then be sure to check it out.

Below is the full list of films coming out. And a list of films leaving.

Paramount shuts down horror films in development

In a not too surprising move, Paramount has shut down the planned "Friday The 13th" reboot. Set for an October 13th 2017 release date, the reboot would have attempted to revitalize the Voorhees franchise. A mere weeks before production was set to begin, director Breck Eisner was set to direct a script from "Prisoners" scribe Aaron Guzikowski. Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes was back to produce.  "RINGS" poor box office performance is rumored to have sparked this latest purge of Paramount's horror schedule. In related news, Brad Pitt's sequel to World War Z has been pushed back from it's June 2017 release date as well to an unannounced date.  Horror's return to R rated glory was gradually returning to the theaters lately with some big, critical and box office hits. Hopefully "RINGS" does not have a ripple effect and shuts down that momentum. The solution is quite simple, Paramount. Make quality films and you will sell tickets (just take a look at "Split" cough cough). Hopefully Jason Voorhees will rise from the grave once again and land at another studio.

2017 Oscar Nominations

Well the Oscar nominations have been announced and it pretty much went as predicted with a few surprises.
First big surprise was the absence of Amy Adams from the Best Actress category.  She seemed like a pretty sure bet.  The one other surprise was Mel Gibson getting a Best Director nomination for Hacksaw Ridge.  Gibson hasn't been nominated since he won for Braveheart in 1996.

A few interesting facts

La La Land got 14 nomination which ties the record with Titanic and All About Eve. Both of those movies won Best Picture so it puts La La Land as the front runner.  There are three movies that had 13 nominations that have lost Best Picture and those are Mary Poppins, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.  It is also the first movie in 3 years to get a nomination in the Top 5 (Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actor, and Actress).   The last movie to be nominated for all 5 was American Hustle in 2013.  Only three movies have ever won all five (It Happened One Night, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Silence of the Lambs).

La La Land is also the third musical to be nominated for Best Picture that was not based on a previously material.  The other two are Anchors Away and All that Jazz.

Barry Jenkins becomes the first black man to be nominated as director, screenwriter, and producer for Moonlight.  If he wins he would be the first black man to win. Only 3 have been nominated previously (John Singleton, Lee Daniels, Steve McQueen).

Kubo and the Two Strings is the second animated movie to ever be nominated for Best Special Effects.  The Nightmare Before Christmas was the first.

O.J.: Made in America was made as a miniseries on ESPN but after playing in a few festivals it got enough support to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary.  At 7 hours 47 minutes it's the longest film ever to be nominated for an Oscar.

Tanna is the first time Australia has been nominated for Best Foreign Language film.

A diverse slate of documentaries is in contention for Documentary Oscar nomination this year.  Early in this Oscar season the two movies that have been getting the most attention are the O.J. Simpson doc “O.J.: Made in America” and “I Am Not Your Negro” about race relations in America.  Also on the list are the Netflix documentary “13th” directed by Ava DuVernay, the Sundance hit “Weiner”, and the Milwaukee Film Festival’s opening night movie “Life, Animated”.

What 5 do you think will ultimately get the nomination?
What movies are missing? (personally I wish “Tickled” made the list)

20 Movies Make the Short List for Best Visual Effects Oscar

12/2/2016

What movie had the best special effects this year?  Well the Oscars released the 20 that are being considered.  The list will be narrowed down to 10 then 5 will be nominated.
So what 5 will be nominated?  This category is always an interesting one as it usually encompasses prestige movies that get nominated for Best Picture with the run of the mill action films.  This year Arrival seems to be the one that can land a nomination in visual effects as well as Best Picture.  Sully could do the same but haven’t heard much about the effects in that one.
Doctor Strange and The Jungle Book are two of the most talked about effects movies of the year and feel confident they will get a nomination.  As of now it feels like The Jungle Book is the clear favorite for the win.

What others ones do you think will be nominated?  What is missing from this list?

Coming and Going on Netflix in December

Netflix and Disney are bringing out the big guns in December.  As Netflix continues it's partnership with Disney they have been getting the big tent pole movies from this year.  December brings the biggest of them all.  Captain America: Civil War will be making it's way to Netflix on Christmas Day.  But before that there are some great movies making it's way onto the streaming service.
While not a movie have to give some love to the Bob Ross collection.  What better way to spend with your family than watching some "happy little trees".
One of the best Big Foot movies of all time Harry and the Hendersons will start steaming on December 1st..  And if you don't think that is the best Big Foot movie of all time then what is?
There is also a little something for everyone.  For those looking for another of this years hits there is The Angry Birds Movie. Or maybe you are looking for more comedy classics then you got Beverly Hills Cop and Animal House to look forward too.  If you want a bit more horror on your Christmas then you have 2006's House of Wax and Hannibal to get you through.

Any movies you are looking forward to in December?

27 Animated Films Submitted to Oscars

11/11/2016

The weather is getting cooler and the quality of movies are getting better.  Must mean its Award Season time.
Today the Oscars announced the 27 movies that have been submitted for the best Animated Feature Oscar.  If you are thinking that's a lot of animated movies you are correct.  It's a record number of submissions.  But not all of them have had their official qualifying run in LA so the number might go down.

Out of the 27 only 5 will go on to get a nominations.  So what 5 will do it?  Since the start of the Animated Feature category Disney and Pixar have won nearly all the awards.  And this year they have 3 on the list (Zootopia, Finding Dory, and Moana).  I doubt all three will get a nomination but which one or two will get left off? And will this be one of those years that Disney/Pixar doesn't win?  They have some strong competition.  Kubo and the Two Strings got tons of great reviews and could become a front runner.   Another question is can Sausage Party get a spot on the top 5 and make it two years in a row that a Rated R film gets nominated (Anomalisa got nominated last year) in what has traditionally been a category filled with kids movies.

Let us know what you think.  Either way if you love animated feature films this has been a great year.
