Looks like a crowded summer only gets busier.

By Stephen Milek I am sure everyone is sick of talking about this and it probably has been talked about to death. But I thought I would give my two cents. When the Oscar nominations were announced there was an almost instant uproar about the nominees. Shortly after the announcement #OscarsSoWhite started trending on Twitter. For the first time in over 15 years the 20 actors and actresses nominated were all white. People started talking about how the Academy is made up of a majority of older white men. An accusation that is not without merit and something people have been complaining about for a long time. But what does that have to do with this year’s nominations? Is the Academy ignoring great performances of non-white actors? Filming has officially begun on Quentin Tarantino's Hateful Eight last Friday. With it, three more cast members have joined the western epic. Lee Horsley. Craig Stark and Belinda Owino join the fray, joining Samuel L. Jackson and Channing Tatum. The film, centered on a stage coach stop over that is hit with a snow storm is scheduled to hit theaters this December. source The Hollywood Reporter Empire magazine has premiered 2 new covers for Avengers - Age Of Ultron recently. Ultron centerfold has not been confirmed as of this writing. source Empire Boyhood has been the Oscar frontrunner for a few months now. But with it's win last night at the Producers Guild Awards and it's win tonight at the Screen Actors Guild Awards it looks like Birdman is making a case for itself. While Birdman won any individual awards at the SAG's, Best Ensemble went to Birdman. Other winners include Best Actor - Eddie Redmayne - The Theory of Everything Best Actress - Julianne Moore - Still Alice Best Supporting Actor- J.K. Simmons - Whiplash Best Supporting Actress- Patricia Arquette - Boyhood Beside Redmayne I would say the others a looking pretty good for Oscar wins. Still not sure if Redmayne can beat out Keaton for Best Actor at the Oscars. What are your thoughts? We are a little late to this game a month into the new year but we want to know what movies you are looking forward to in 2015. It's going to be a big year with lots of big tent pole movies. The big question will anything beat Star Wars Episode VII in our poll. After the success of our poll looking back at the Oscars from 20 years ago we decided to do one looking back at the Oscars from 75 years ago.
1939 is considered one of the greatest years of film. Lots of classics were released that year. The 10 movies nominated for Best Picture were Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach, Wuthering Heights, Ninotchka, Of Mice and Men, Dark Victory, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, and Love Affair. The big winner at the Oscars was Gone with the Wind which won a total of 9 awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Results below by Steve Milek It’s no secret we like our horror movies here. And one of the more fascinating characters in a horror movie lately was Martin in The Human Centipede 2. So when we heard that the Laurence Harvey who played Martin was going to be in a new short it got us excited. We wanted to see what kind of creepiness he brought to this role. Finally after waiting to see it the movie was finally released online. “Call Girl” has Laurence Harvey playing a man who brings a prostitute to his house for nefarious purposes. He sets up a webcam to broadcast his evening someone on the other end. We get to watch as though seeing it through the webcam. It’s a 5 minute short with a cool twist at the end. I don’t want to give too much away but it’s worth a watch to see how creepy Laurence Harvey can be even in a non Human Centipede movie This is the first movie directed by Jill Sixx Gevargizianand and not a bad start. I do wish it was a little bit longer and told more of a story. But I look forward to what she does next. CALL GiRL from Jill VI Gevargizian on Vimeo. By Christopher K. House
2014 was a mixed bag for film fans. For every good film I saw, I swear I saw 10 horrible ones. Picking my top 5 was easy, picking the bottom 5 was tough because there was so much competition. Hopefully, 2015 won't repeat the trend. But hey, there's a new Star Wars movie coming out so, it can't be that bad. Right? 5) Dumb And Dumber To This one really let me down. I was so hyped to see Lloyd and Harry back at it. The trailer was hilarious, the story had potential, the cast was perfect. Then I saw the film. This is the story of a comedy that had all the funny parts in the trailer. The story turned out to be an exact rehash of the original. The jokes were dumb and the script was dumber. 4) A Haunted House 2 I can't say much about this film except, What is this supposed to be? The first Haunted House movie was stupid and, this was just worse. Just like Scary Movie was a bad spoof of horror films, this was a bad spoof of bad spoof movies. There was nothing redeeming about this in any way. 3) I, Frankenstein Frankenstein is an action hero. That should be enough to set you straight. If not, Frankenstein is an action hero that is ripped with a 6 pack. If your not running away by now, Frankenstein is an action hero that is ripped with a 6 pack and, is a martial arts master. I get it, this was based on a semi-popular graphic novel. Some graphic novels shouldn't hit the big screen. I, Frankenstein was an insult to the big green guy. Or, ripped muscle dude in this case. 2) Leprechaun Origins Another horror reboot. This one was a reboot of the classic Warwick Davis opus about the little gold digger from Ireland. For a couple of years, WWE (yes the wrestling people) promoted the film and, it would be starring it's own "Hornswaggle". I was genuinely interested in this. Going in, I didn't see a trailer or any pictures of the titular character. When I eventually did see the leprechaun it was pretty shocking. It wasn't a leprechaun, it was a weird Jersey devil looking thing. For all the promoting WWE did for Hornswaggle, all you see of him was his beady eyes behind a horrible latex mask. Everything else was a horrible cheap puppet. No wise cracks, no humor, no good. This was a bad as a horror movie could get. 1) Left Behind Not only is this the worst film of 2014, it is also a contender for the worst film EVER made. This film made me want to punch a kitten in the face. There are bad Nic Cage films, then there is this pile of garbage. Where to start? The rapture is a cool story and, could be a cool movie. Wait, it's already been done. This Is The End is how you do a rapture. This weird quasi-religious message was just horrible. I expected to see the name Uwe Boll somewhere in the credits but, I suppose it wouldn't be that bad then. This is a new low for Cage after years of bad films. Nic, it's OK to say no to a script here and there, you won't hurt any feelings. Sometimes looking back gives us a different perspective. So we decided to look back 20 years to see if the Oscars go it right. Now we didn't want to open up the can of worms of who should have been nominated so we just left it with the choices they gave us back in 1995 for the movies released in 1994.
1994 is considered one of the best years for films and IMD has Shawshank Redemption as number 1 on their Top 250 and Pulp Fiction at number 5. So should have Forrest Gump won Best Picture? First I have to thank everyone who voted. It was one of our most successful polls and if you liked it we will try to have more. The results actually surprised us. Like I said Pulp Fiction is now considered one of the landmark movies of the 90's and Shawshank Redmption is just as beloved. While Forrest Gump was always considered the safe vote. Well turns out 20 years later people still love Forrest Gump and while it wasn't even close for Best Picture. With Gump getting almost 4 times the votes of Pulp Fiction and Shawshank. The Best Actor race was a bit closer but again Tom Hanks easily beating Morgan Freeman. Best Actress race was close. Jessica Lange won for Blue Sky narrowly beating Jodie Foster for Nell. Best supporting actor again went to Martin Landau who surprisingly beat Samuel Jackson. As it did at the awards Forrest Gump won best Director and adapted screenplay. But it was a very close race for both of those. And it came down to some last minute votes in the adapted screenplay category there was a tie for a long period of time between Gump and Shawshank. But Pulp Fiction easily won Best Original screenplay. The one category that actually differed from the actual awards was Best Supporting Actress. Diane Wiest who won the prize 20 years ago was one of the lowest vote getters. But it came down to a battler of Uma Thurman for Pulp Fiction and Helen Mirren for the Madness of King George. This is another category that was tied going into the last night of voting but Uma Thurman pulled it out. The complete list of winners from our poll Best Picture- Forrest Gump Best Actor - Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump Best Actress - Jessica Lange - Blue Sky Best Supporting Actor - Martin Landau - Ed Wood Best Supporting Actress - Uma Thurman - Pulp Fiction Best Director - Robert Zemeckis - Forrest Gump Best Adapted Screenplay - Forrest Gump Best Original Screenplay - Pulp Fiction Check out the link for full breakdown of the votes. |
