Why I think The Grand Budapest Hotel Should Win Best Picture

If you have followed my blogs you know that I have said that Birdman is my favorite movie of the year (my review here) and I think it deserves all the praise it has been getting.  And while I still haven’t seen Boyhood I am sure it is a great movie.  But I am hoping that The Grand Budapest Hotel wins Best Picture (my review here). And there are a few reasons.

First it’s a comedy.  When the Oscar nominations were announced it ignited a ton of controversy. One was about the lack of diversity among the nominees which started #OscarSoWhite trending. Then the weekend after the nominations American Sniper came out and caused a whole new wave of controversies. For me both things kind of took away some of the fun of the Oscars.  That’s why I think we need a movie that is a whole lot of fun to win it.  The Grand Budapest Hotel is lighthearted and a good time.  There aren’t really serious undertones to it and was controversy free.  I think it’s time the Oscars look at the brighter side of things again.

Another reason a The Grand Budapest Hotel win would be good is it would be a change of pace. We get it movie people love movies about movie people.  We had The Artist and Argo both movies about movies win Best Picture and it’s a trend I think should stop.  It feels like the Oscars are stuck in a rut and keep awarding similar themed movies.  So awarding a truly original funny movie about the happenings at a hotel would be a nice change.

I guess after a dark and contentious winter so far I am just looking for something to brighten the day and I think a win for The Grand Budapest Hotel would give us something fun to talk about.
