Last night at the Directors Guild Awards history was made. For the first time in it's 68 year history the same director won two years in a row. Alejandro González Iñárritu won last year for Birdman and this year he won for The Revenant.. The win was a bit of a surprise and many pundits felt that it would go to George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road . The DGA is usually a good indicator on what will happen on Oscar night with the winner usually going on to win either Best Picture, Best Director or both. But this year is not normal. The three big Oscar indicators all went to different movies. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award went to Spotlight and the Producers Guild Awards (PGA) went to The Big Short. Now that the DGA went with The Revenant there is no telling what will happen on Oscar night. Although with the win and the most Oscar nominations of the bunch I think The Revenant is the front runner to win. But besides for those three movies you still can't count out Mad Max: Fury Road which despite missing out on the big three awards has quietly racked up more awards than the other movies.
Fun fact in addition to winning the DGA last night The Revenant also won the Annie Award (given for best animation) for Best Character Animation in a Live Action Film for work on the bear. And I also learned that the bears name was Judy.
