This year some of the highest grossing movies of all time have been released. Jurassic World and Age of Ultron have the number 1 and number 3 biggest opening weekends of all time. And we still have Star Wars Episode VII which looks to break all kind of records. But this past weekend we saw the exact opposite. Almost every new release bombed and two movies entered the top 5 for worst openings of all time. Overall the box office was down but wasn’t that bad of a weekend but for individual movies it was awful.

The rumors have been coming for the past week or so and today the Academy made it official. Chris Rock will be the Oscar host in 2016. This is not a new gig for Rock who previously hosted the Oscars in 2005, but it will be the first time with the new Oscar producers David Hill and Reginald Hudlin. Hill has experience with producing live events on TV and Hudlin brings the movie knowledge. Hudlin has worked with Chris Rock in the past on his TV show Everybody Hates Chris. The Oscars have had a long line of disappointing Oscar hosts and Rock's 2005 hosting isn't all that memorable. Last year the Oscars even got Neil Patrick Harris who has be very successful hosting other award shows and the Oscars somehow made him look boring. With new producers and Rock on the stage the Academy hopes to have an entertaining show. What do you think of Rock as host? Why do you think hosting the Oscar's is such a difficult task? The Oscars air on ABC on Sunday February 28th. John Ridley will be directing a movie about the 1992 L.A. Riots based on his screenplay. Ridley a Milwaukee native and Oscar winning screenwriting of 12 Years a Slave and director of Jimi: All is By My Side will taking over the reins of the film that once had Spike Lee attached to direct. The riots that took place after the 4 LAPD officers were acquitted in the Rodney King beating. It lasted over 4 days and did over $1 billion worth of damage. The film looks at the riots from several people involved. The script was first written in 2006 and came close to being made with Spike Lee directing but budget issues but an end to that. Justin Lin (Fast and Furious) was also in talks to direct the film. But now it looks like John Ridley will get the chance to direct his own script. Most recently Ridley has created the TV show American Crime and has both written and directed episodes. Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind) will be producing and has said about Ridley “We have barely seen the tip of the iceberg in terms of John Ridley’s talent”. The movie looks to start shooting early next year. No release date has been announced. For the first time in 44 years a composer will be awarded the AFI Lifetime Achievement. And if there is one composer it is John Williams. With over 150 credits Williams has written some of the most iconic scores. From Jaws to Star Wars to Jurassic Park to Harry Potter rarely does he disappoint with a score. As Sir Howard Stringer (Chair, AFI Board of Trustees) puts it "John Williams has written the soundtrack to our lives". He currently holds the record for most Oscar nominations for any living person with 49. Although he hasn't won in a number of years he has won a total of 5 with his first win in 1971 for Fiddler on the Roof. The ceremony will be on June 9, 2016 in Los Angeles. It will be shown on TNT later that month. What's your favorite Williams' Score? Marvel made some announcements this morning and release dates got shuffled again.
