AFI postponed their announcement of the 10 Best Films of the year till they could see The Force Awakens. Not that the movie has screened for critics and the embargo is off they managed to find space on their list for the movie. Still uncertain how it will impact the Oscar race but AFI is the first to include it. Missing from their list are Revenant and The Hateful Eight movies that have slowly been gaining steam. Other than that you got your typical movies that have been popping. Spotlight, Mad Max: Fury Road, Carol, and The Martian. The Big Short continues to raise it's profile. The full list below. Let us know what you think. Do you think The Force Awakens will make more lists? Does it have a chance at an Oscar. AFI's Top 10
The Big Short Bridge of Spies Carol Inside Out Mad Max: Fury Road The Martian Room Spotlight Star Wars: The Force Awakens Straight Outta Compton "Mad Max: Fury Road" joins 6 other movies eligible for best Makeup and Hairstyle Oscar. Apparently Tom Hardy must have had a fun year getting makeup because he is in 3 of the movies eligible besides Mad Max he is in The Revenant and Legend. The oddest movie on the list is "The 100-Year-Old-Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared" a movie I have never heard of and probably won't make the final three. Out of the 7 movies 3 will be nominated Full list below. What movies do you think will get the final nominations. The Academy announced today the 74 songs eligible for Best Original Song. Most of these I have never heard so hard to say what will get nominated. But we could be talking about 50 Shades of Grey getting an Oscar nomination. What surprises you most from the songs? With separate categories for Drama and Comedy/Musical it's always hard to interpret the Golden Globes impact on the Oscar Race. But it does help solidify the front runners. And we have the usual suspects of Spotlight, Room, and Carol. As well as The Martian making an appearance as a comedy? Mad Max: Fury Road got nominated for Best Picture and Director and while I have been reluctant to think it will actually score an Oscar Best Picture nomination it's looking pretty good right now. The movie that got the biggest boost was the Revenant. While it was always expected to do well during award season it hasn't had a great showing so far. But with a Best Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor nomination it puts it back in the top 10. On the other hand The Hateful Eight only got 2 nominations and failed to really get any kind of boost. Joy and The Big Short are two that have been hard to determine where they will end up and even though they got a Best Comedy Nomination hard to tell if it's enough to boost it to the Oscars. Take a look at the full nominations below. Let us know what you think. Looking for help to predict the Oscars? Well, the SAG nominations don’t help at all. We have surprise nominations for Trumbo, Straight Outta Compton, and Beasts of No Nation. Favorites The Martian and Creed were shut out. Trumbo which hasn’t got much (if any) love so far during the award season scored the most nominations with 3. The other movie missing is The Hateful Eight but that is likely due to the fact no screeners were sent out to the guild. Quentin Tarantino insisted that voters see it in 70mm and refused to send out screeners so it’s likely that not many people saw it. And a nomination for Sarah Silverman? That came out of nowhere.
Here are the nominations What stands out for you? Over last weekend there a number of critic societies that announced their winners. The biggest one was the LA Film Critics Association. There was also was the New York Film Critics Online, the DC Area Critic Association, and The Boston Society of Film Critics. The Online Film Critics Association announced their nominations but no winners. To sum it up Spotlight got the biggest boost and won Best Picture in all four of the local critic awards. Mad Max continues to do strongly and was runner up in a few and well represented in the technical awards. Best Actor was kind of all over the place. Leonardo DiCaprio finally got some love for The Revenant a role many people think will finally win him an Oscar but has largely been ignored in this early award season. Despite the love of Carol Cate Blanchet has not been able to crack the Best Actress. The race has been Today we learned the 20 movies that will be vying for an Oscar Nominations. Pretty much the ones you would expected. The only one that stands out as an odd choice is Bridge of Spies. Let us know what you think of the list and who will be getting the nominations. Another film critic association has spoken and for the second time this week Mad Max: Fury Road won Best Picture. The Boston Online Film Critics Association (BOFCA) announced their awards and it is similar to both the National Board of Review and NYFCC awards announced earlier this week. Like NBR Mad Max: Fury Road won the top spot. But unlike the NBR Mad Max also won awards for George Miller as Best Director, John Seale for Best Cinematography, Margaret Sixel for Best Editing, and Junkie XL for Best Original Score. The two actor award went to Creed. Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor and Sylvester Stallone won Best Supporting Actor. The Actress awards were exactly the same as the NYFCC with Saoirse Ronan winning for Brooklyn and Kristen Stewart winning for Clouds of Sils Maria. Continuing to rack up awards and rapidly becoming front runners are Son of Saul for Best Foreign Language Film, Amy for Best Documentary, and Inside Out for Best Animated film. Boston set Spotlight did pick up a couple of awards for Best Screenplay and Best Ensemble. BOFCA also releases their top 10 in rank order (unlike the NBR who releases a top 10 in alphabetical order) so we get an idea of what their favorite films are. Interestingly Inside Out didn’t make their top 10 but the animated film Anomalisa did, and Son of Saul wasn’t in the 10 top but the foreign language film Tangerine made the list. So it seems Inside Out and Son of Saul were close wins. In terms of what we can expect from the Oscars a few categories are starting to show clear front runners but Best Picture is still unclear. While Carol didn’t make the NBR it won NYFCC and made BOFCA top 10. And the big question is will Mad Max be able to crack the Best Picture list? Also still missing are other films that seem to awards friendly like The Revenant, The Hateful Eight, and Joy all of which come out on Christmas and possibly wasn’t seen by a lot of voters. And as always the biggest question. What will happen when Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally gets seen by the world? Stay tuned next week we get the LA Film Critics Awards and the Golden Globe Nominations.
