The Toronto International Film Festival is one of the largest film festivals in the world and this year will be their 40th Festival. TIFF is seen as the first stop for Oscar contenders and there are always lots of world premieres that can make or break a movies chances for Oscar glory.
The first film announcement was made today with the Galas and Special Presentations. These are the two categories where we see some of the bigger named movies. This year is no exception. Movies like Johnny Depp's Black Mass, Ridley Scott's The Martian, The Beasts of No Nation, and Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl (which looks to get Eddie Redmayne a second Oscar nomination in a row) all will be there. The new Michael Moore documentary Where to Invade Next will also have its premiere.
Demolition directed by Jean-Marc Vallee(Wild, Dallas Buyers Club) will be the opening night film. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts. The interesting thing about this pick is that Fox Searchlight recently announced that it will be released in April of 2016 leading most to believe that the studio has very little faith that the movie will be any good. With its pick as the opening night movie at TIFF maybe they have changed their minds.
The ful list of movies announced is below.
