The Independent Spirit Award Nominations were announced today and Birdman is the big nominee. Getting 6 nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Cinematographer. But it was followed closely by Boyhood, Selma, and Nightcrawler with 5 each and Whiplash and Love is Strange had 4 each.
Foxcatcher which is getting lots of Oscar talk was ineligible for individual spirit awards but did get a Special Distinction Award for it's uniqueness of vision. Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice also was not eligible for individual awards but got the Robert Altman special award for best cast ensemble.
What this means for Oscars is hard to say. Birdman and Boyhood seem likely Oscar nominees already and just adds to their momentum. But Selma and Nightcrawler could get a boost. It will be interesting if Nightcrawler can get some Oscar nods it is a dark and gritty movie and not your typical Oscar movie. It was well received by critics and right now seems most likely just to get an Original Screenplay nomination..
Whiplash is another movie that could get a boost from its nominations. It has steadily been gaining steam and could end up scoring a Best Picture nom. I think the only nomination that is likely at this point is Best Supporting Actor for J.K. Simmons.
As far as snubs go it is hard to say because I don't know what movies were ineligible. So did Bill Murray get a snub for St. Vincent? I am not sure.
