Amazon is following in Netflix's footsteps and getting into the original picture business. Their biggest acquisition so far came at this weekends American Film Market where they picked up Nicolas Winding Refn's The Neon Demon. The movie was financed by Gaumont and Wild Bunch and they have been shopping it around to distributors since Cannes. Amazon got the U.S. distribution rights and will be releasing it stateside next summer.
Nicolas Winding Refn is one of the more interesting filmmakers out there today. After getting critical success and cult like status for Drive he followed it up with Only God Forgives a bizarre tale that had neither. But his films are always intriguining and look great. Up next for him is The Neon Demon a horror movie staring Elle Fanning and Keanu Reeves. The movie is about a women (Elle Fanning) who moves to Hollywood and has her body "devoured" by older women trying to keep their looks.
Let us know what you think. Was this a good pick up by Amazon? Are you looking forward to Refn's next movie?
