Sometimes looking back gives us a different perspective. So we decided to look back 20 years to see if the Oscars go it right. Now we didn't want to open up the can of worms of who should have been nominated so we just left it with the choices they gave us back in 1995 for the movies released in 1994.
1994 is considered one of the best years for films and IMD has Shawshank Redemption as number 1 on their Top 250 and Pulp Fiction at number 5. So should have Forrest Gump won Best Picture?
First I have to thank everyone who voted. It was one of our most successful polls and if you liked it we will try to have more. The results actually surprised us. Like I said Pulp Fiction is now considered one of the landmark movies of the 90's and Shawshank Redmption is just as beloved. While Forrest Gump was always considered the safe vote. Well turns out 20 years later people still love Forrest Gump and while it wasn't even close for Best Picture. With Gump getting almost 4 times the votes of Pulp Fiction and Shawshank.
The Best Actor race was a bit closer but again Tom Hanks easily beating Morgan Freeman. Best Actress race was close. Jessica Lange won for Blue Sky narrowly beating Jodie Foster for Nell. Best supporting actor again went to Martin Landau who surprisingly beat Samuel Jackson. As it did at the awards Forrest Gump won best Director and adapted screenplay. But it was a very close race for both of those. And it came down to some last minute votes in the adapted screenplay category there was a tie for a long period of time between Gump and Shawshank. But Pulp Fiction easily won Best Original screenplay.
The one category that actually differed from the actual awards was Best Supporting Actress. Diane Wiest who won the prize 20 years ago was one of the lowest vote getters. But it came down to a battler of Uma Thurman for Pulp Fiction and Helen Mirren for the Madness of King George. This is another category that was tied going into the last night of voting but Uma Thurman pulled it out.
