Just when you think you are getting a handle on Oscar nominations someone has to go throw a new monkey wrench into the discussion. And that monkey wrench is American Sniper.
Today the PGA (Producers Guild of America not the Golf association) announced their nominees. They have a pretty good track record of predicting Oscars. A snub from them most likely means no win for Best Picture.
So what do the nominees tell us today? Well sorry Selma and Unbroken you will not be winning. And American Sniper which had initial mediocre reviews seems to be coming on strong lately. I had it as a long shot but looks like I need to move it up in my predictions. Foxcatcher which had been fading lately also got a nomination and with really strong reviews could end up with a best picture nomination. Nightcrawler and Whiplash are two smaller movies that continue to do really well. I expect Whiplash to get a Best Picture nomination but still not convinced Nightcrawler will make the final cut.
