Another film critic association has spoken and for the second time this week Mad Max: Fury Road won Best Picture. The Boston Online Film Critics Association (BOFCA) announced their awards and it is similar to both the National Board of Review and NYFCC awards announced earlier this week. Like NBR Mad Max: Fury Road won the top spot. But unlike the NBR Mad Max also won awards for George Miller as Best Director, John Seale for Best Cinematography, Margaret Sixel for Best Editing, and Junkie XL for Best Original Score. The two actor award went to Creed. Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor and Sylvester Stallone won Best Supporting Actor. The Actress awards were exactly the same as the NYFCC with Saoirse Ronan winning for Brooklyn and Kristen Stewart winning for Clouds of Sils Maria. Continuing to rack up awards and rapidly becoming front runners are Son of Saul for Best Foreign Language Film, Amy for Best Documentary, and Inside Out for Best Animated film. Boston set Spotlight did pick up a couple of awards for Best Screenplay and Best Ensemble. BOFCA also releases their top 10 in rank order (unlike the NBR who releases a top 10 in alphabetical order) so we get an idea of what their favorite films are. Interestingly Inside Out didn’t make their top 10 but the animated film Anomalisa did, and Son of Saul wasn’t in the 10 top but the foreign language film Tangerine made the list. So it seems Inside Out and Son of Saul were close wins. In terms of what we can expect from the Oscars a few categories are starting to show clear front runners but Best Picture is still unclear. While Carol didn’t make the NBR it won NYFCC and made BOFCA top 10. And the big question is will Mad Max be able to crack the Best Picture list? Also still missing are other films that seem to awards friendly like The Revenant, The Hateful Eight, and Joy all of which come out on Christmas and possibly wasn’t seen by a lot of voters. And as always the biggest question. What will happen when Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally gets seen by the world? Stay tuned next week we get the LA Film Critics Awards and the Golden Globe Nominations. Full List of winners below Robert Loggia best known for his roles in Big, Scarface, Prizzi's Honor, and Independence Day died today at the age of 85. He had been battling Alzheimer disease for the past 5 years and he died in his home in Los Angeles. Loggia was nominated for a supporting actor Academy Award for “Jagged Edge” in 1986. It's still early in award season and so far there is no clear front runner. But The New York Film Critics Circle has given Carol a nice bump. Directed by Todd Haynes and staring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara the lesbian love story has been slowly percolating toward the top but now it has vaulted to the big leagues. Winning Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Film it pretty much swept the major categories. The one surprising omision was Best Actress which could go to either Blanchett or Mara and it's possible they split the vote letting Saoirse Ronan take the prize for Brooklyn. The biggest surprise win was probably Kristen Stewart for Best Supporting Actress for Clouds of Sils Maria. A movie that actually premiered at Cannes in 2014. Full list is below. Let us know what your thoughts are. As we get closer to the Oscars they start releasing the short list of movies that will be advancing in the race. Today we got the 15 Feature Documentaries moving on. No surprise that Amy and The Look of Silence made the list. The two docs appear to be the front runners in most awards races this year. Other notable movies are Going Clear the Scientology documentary by Alex Gibney and Where to Invade Next the new doc by Michael Moore. Finders Keepers is one that feels like it is missing. The movie got high praise during it's run on the festival circuit but failed to make the cut. If you made it to the Milwaukee Film Festival you might have seen a few movies on the list. Cartel Land, He Named Me Malala, We Come as Friends, and The Look of Silence all played at the festival. Full list below. What movies do you think are missing. One of the first big announcements of award season is the National Board of Review Top 10 Films of the Year. In the past they have been a good predictor of what will go on to get a nomination for Best Picture. While they aren't always accurate (last year A Most Violent Year never gained traction despite being named Best Film) their choices help define what movies we will be talking about the rest of award season. Their choices are usually all over the place with a few big budget movies and small indie movies ranking in the top 10. This year is no different with the big Studio action flick Mad Max: Fury Road taking the top spot. Spotlight, Room, and The Martian have all dominated the awards conversation and it was expecting one of those would take the top spot but they all did make the Top 10. Despite the Best Film win Mad Max didn't win in any other categories. The other winners were spread out over various other noteworthy films. Including The Hateful Eight (Quintin Tarantino-Best Original Screenplay, Jennifer Jason Leigh-Best Supporting Actress ), The Martian (Ridley Scott-Best Director, Matt Damon-Best Actor, Drew Goddard-Best Adapted Screenplay), and Room (Brie Larson-Best Actress). Other notable wins are Sylvester Stallone for Best Supporting Actor for Creed, Inside Out for Best Animated Feature, Amy for Best Documentary and Son of Saul for Best Foreign Language Film. The question now is can Mad Max turn this win into an Oscar nomination? And can Star Wars: The Force Awakens which didn't screen in time for the NBR get any kind of awards traction? Also what about other movies that got left off. Will Carol, Joy, Steve Jobs, Brooklyn, or The Revenant be able to get momentum. Full list of winners below. Let us know your thoughts. What was the Best Milwaukee Film of the 2015? The Film Bloggers of Milwaukee and Beyond aim to find out. The only way to do that is to see as many local films as possible. If you are a local filmmaker or know local filmmakers let them know to send us their film to be eligible for the FBOMB Award. Screeners and press kits if available can be sent to milwaukeemovietalk@gmail.com The monthly Netflix shuffle has been announced and as far as new movies go nothing to really get too excited about. The most interesting thing coming in December is A Very Murray Christmas. Directed by Sofia Coppola the variety shows features Bill Murray in a variety show featuring lots of celebrity guests. Also coming is the Western The Ridiculous 6 by Adam Sandler. The movie has got tons of bad press before the release and at this point it's more of a curiosity piece than anything to get excited over. Check out below for the full list. The Academy has announced the 10 Animated Shorts and 10 Live Action shorts advancing to the Oscars. While shorts are usually unknown and I haven’t seen many of them there are two interesting omissions. Disney has won plenty of animated shorts over the years and last year’s Fest was one of their best shorts. But despite the love for Frozen at the Oscars a couple of years ago Frozen Fever failed to make the cut. Also, Pixar had two feature films this year and with them comes two short films. But only Sanjay’s Super Team which will screen before The Good Dinosaur made the cut. Lava which screened before Inside Out got left off. Has anyone seen any other movies on the lists? What movies do you think should have been included? Full list below. Amazon is following in Netflix's footsteps and getting into the original picture business. Their biggest acquisition so far came at this weekends American Film Market where they picked up Nicolas Winding Refn's The Neon Demon. The movie was financed by Gaumont and Wild Bunch and they have been shopping it around to distributors since Cannes. Amazon got the U.S. distribution rights and will be releasing it stateside next summer. Nicolas Winding Refn is one of the more interesting filmmakers out there today. After getting critical success and cult like status for Drive he followed it up with Only God Forgives a bizarre tale that had neither. But his films are always intriguining and look great. Up next for him is The Neon Demon a horror movie staring Elle Fanning and Keanu Reeves. The movie is about a women (Elle Fanning) who moves to Hollywood and has her body "devoured" by older women trying to keep their looks. Let us know what you think. Was this a good pick up by Amazon? Are you looking forward to Refn's next movie? |
